"I think the film project has been a tremendous success. I've watched the kids grow in confidence, grow in self esteem - and develop a sense of humour!"

Eddie Mahoney - Lead teacher Alternative Curriculum at Sneyd Community School reflects on Dark Water

“Did you know Slade’s “Merry Xmas Everybody was written by Bloxwich’s own Noddy Holder? Or that there was a long tradition of bitties and tackies – small metal workers in the area?” Ciara, student at Walsall Academy.

'ReDiscover Bloxwich' is a Heritage Lottery funded project which has enabled young people from Walsall Academy to learn about the local heritage of Bloxwich. They reported that doing the project has helped them to take pride in their area and have something they can feel proud of protecting.

There has been lots for the you people to do on the project - not least interviewing Noddy Holder! That created a stir at the school and he was great company - spending two hours being interviewed and then smiling for numerous selfies and local press photographs.

The young people have also spent months making their film, which involved lots of workshops, trips to the local archive, visits from historian Stuart Williams, speaking to older people at the local Stan Ball centre and so much more.

We'll be showing exclusive clips from the project over the next few months and this is an extract from the film which centres on the rich musical tradition of the area.

“By unearthing a range of fascinating information we can give a sense of pride and belonging in the local area.” Joe, student at Walsall Academy.

There is a film, and fab behind the scenes piece (complete with classic blooper reel), website, a richly illustrated large print book (designed to inspire reminiscence for older people in Bloxwich) and public art pieces placed around Bloxwich by sculptor Luke Perry.

Project partners include: Walsall Council Creative Development Team, Walsall Academy, Walsall Local History Centre, Walsall Council Community Development Team, Walsall Council Regeneration and Development Team.
