I guess we’ve all been thinking about the environment lately with COP-26. It’s getting harder and harder for people to ignore it, and it feels especially grim as our world leaders seem to be wrestling with political interests that conflict with helping us save our beautiful world for our children and their children. Perhaps it’s going to come down to people-power pushing against the huge powers-that-be, after all.
With this in mind, and trying not to feel overwhelmed with a feeling of powerlessness, Julia and I at Catcher Media thought about some of the small things that we’ve done that may have helped over the years. Doing this eco-audit helped us feel more positive and inspired us too do more. There’s always more to do obviously, but it’s good to appreciate what you have done.

We’ve been committed to ethical banking for over 25 years.
We use Octopus, a green energy provider.
We use Ecosia, the search engine ‘that plants trees and protect biodiversity’ and try not to send unnecessary emails (they have a carbon footprint too).
We have solar panels fitted by local company Solar Kinetics, from which we get electricity and with an added diverter, some hot water (thanks Gordon & Jaine at SK for the heads up on that one).
We cycle to all of our local meetings.
We work with local freelancers and companies, where we can.

We work with organisations whose ethics don’t conflict with our own including schools, charities, NGOs etc.
We specifically ask our suppliers to use or source recycled packaging, where possible.
We don’t update our video or computing equipment unless necessary (sometimes buying secondhand), and use it until the bitter end. Julia & Rick both still use iPhone 6’s (and we get lots of looks too, puzzled ones that is : )
Before Catcher Media (in the early 1990’s) we had a craft business called ‘Strawberry Crafts’ for 3-4 years, and we only used recycled and natural materials to make our own paper, cards and books – boy that was hard work!
