Chewing The Cud: Memories from Hereford’s Old Livestock Market. This entertaining and warm-hearted film was produced by Hereford-based Catcher Media who worked with a group of talented trainees and volunteers from across the county to portray the characters that gave the old market its vibrancy and unique heritage.
There are anecdotes galore about traders juggling china, livestock drovers driving their flocks through the city, visits by The Queen, children playing in the market after hours, the happy crowds arriving for Miners Fortnight, and stubborn pigs, to name just a few.
In interviews with farmers, auctioneers, townspeople, breeders, traders, and council workers, the film revisits the past, but with an eye to the future. It’s complemented with newly-found 16mm film footage and beautiful archive photographs. Watch the full film.
The film was seen by 2324 people and played in arts centres, rural venues and the new market! The film was voted 2nd best film of Borderlines Film Festival (out of 59 films) gaining an average score of 4.8 out of 5.
The Take One Exhibition, which involved artwork from 85 school-children, attracted 672 visitors.
Copies of the DVD have been distributed to 60 local schools, county libraries, participants, partner organisations, local history groups and agricultural societies.
“A triumph. The film is such a professional piece of work and beautifully crafted and edited with some lovely devices and transitions to punctuate the stories. Warm, funny and with wonderful characters and also an important record of an important part of Hereford history.” – John Banks, Board member, Borderlines Film festival.
