TO BOLDLY GO

A guide to independent travel for young people with SEND (special educational needs and disabilities). An upbeat and positive drama which follows the exploits of Jodie as she takes her first journey using public transport to the leisure centre in Tamworth.

The film shows how she overcomes the barriers that young people with learning difficulties might face on such a trip. The film provides lots of tips about journey planning, being confident, thinking about safety, using assistive technology and asking for help from friends, family and bus drivers.

The film was devised through creative engagement and participatory video methods with Year 11 students from the Two Rivers School in Tamworth. The students also acted in the film and helped out behind the scenes.

This film has alternative versions with annotated sections to further facilitate lessons and to trigger discussion about independent travel with students. It can be shown after an initial viewing to prompt more in-depth discussion among students. Extra resources and a Travel game are available on request. A special screening of the film took place at the Odeon cinema in Tamworth and was covered by BBC Midlands Today.
